Description:

Heatwave was painted in 2018 when I lived in Bournemouth. I had moved there still unaware that what I was experiencing was BIND (Benzodiazepine Induced Neurological Dysfunction) -an injury induced by taking a medication as prescribed, It had been over a year that I'd been unable to work and still not know what was wrong with me.

By this point I began to question whether something was wrong with my mind, my outlook, despite not understanding how such physical systems could arise from that, espcially when I felt relatively happy with the life I had built in France. But with nothing "unusual" showing up in physical tests, I began to question myself.

To counteract this I decided to move to a place where I could follow one of my dreams, and that maybe that would help. So I moved to Bournemouth, where I could surf. I knew the waves were small but it didn't matter, I just wanted to be in the water, and feel the flow-state of surfing.

Unfortunately, I soon found out that I was toon physically weak still to even hold a surfboard, let alone surf. I was also still dealing with extreme heat sensitivity. Even mild heat to others felt unbearable, and like I was on fire on the inside. I had to put the surfboard down, and know that one day, once I was more healed, I'd be able to live out the dream of surfing, and be back in sunshine comfortably.

Heatwave's multi-layered textures add to the sense of oppresiveness felt when heat feels threatening, and when your entire world becomes your bedroom, despite knowing the life you could have outside of that. The painting was created with the duality of a  nightmare and the allure of dreams in mind. The bright red speaks to the desire to feel alive again in the waves, and the intense sense of danger that comes with an injured nervous system that struggles to regulate heat properly.
